Where are the Hillises?

Follow David, Teresa and Isaac on their sabbatical

• Pastor Dave spent the week of May 7 at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, a Benedictine monastery in Abiquiu, N.M. He fully participated in the life of the community there, following their daily schedule for a full 7 days. It was great preparation for his sabbatical study on the practices of the early desert monastics (St. Benedict, St. Francis of Assisi, & St. Ignacius). Pastor Dave hopes to learn from the lives of these 3 very different and groundbreaking men to determine how to apply their spiritual disciplines, practices and heart for broken people to our lives, as busy, 21st century suburban Americans who struggle to find time to practice any spiritual disciplines.

• May 25 – July 24: The Hillis family will tour Israel, then travel on to Italy and Spain with stops along the way. David wants to learn about the early monastics in the places where their ministries began, while also enjoying some down time with the family.

• July 25 – Aug. 22: Teresa and Isaac will return to the US while Pastor Dave hikes the historic Camino de Santiago, the 3rd most popular Christian pilgrimage location in the world today. Rather than taking the popular Camino Frances (made famous by the Martin Sheen film The Way), Pastor Dave plans to walk from the French border at Irún along the Camino del Norte to the Camino Primitivo to Santiago de Compostela. If time allows, he will hike the Camino Finisterre, which is the final leg from Sanitago to the ocean, for a total of 550 miles. To see a great movie of the Camino del Norte up close, check out Footprints, The Path of Your Life on Netflix (see the movie trailer).

The pilgrimage Pastor Dave will walk this summer, from Irún to Finisterre

David will be writing about his experiences and the places they're visiting as time (and internet connections) permit. Click below to follow along.
